How to Teach Preschool Children Life Skills

It is important for preschoolers to begin developing life skills at an early age and for educators and parents to begin teaching them. Most preschoolers are interacting with peers for the first time and experiencing firsthand the realities of making choices and receiving the benefits or negative consequences of their actions. Because of their curiosity, developing independence and mastering basic skills can be effectively taught with patience and perseverance.

Instructions

    • 1

Encourage your preschoolers to interact with other preschoolers by scheduling group bonding activities, field trips and group play time. Take your preschoolers to the park and allow them to play with each other without interference. Look for the children who isolate themselves. For children who are not as social, you may need to provide some guidance and encouragement.

    • 2

Teach the children about empathy. Ask questions about how they would feel if they were bullied or teased. Whenever a child throws a tantrum or behaves poorly, ask him how his behavior makes you and the other children feel. This will make him more aware of his actions, reactions of others to them and consequences of them.

    • 3

Create attachment and affection bonds. Teach your preschool children how to trust the people around them, surround themselves with the right influences and identify safe environments. Developing trust recognition at an early age can prevent the child from associating himself with poor influences. You can assign an art project where each child creates a photo album with pictures of people they love and trust, such as firemen, doctors, policemen and parents, and places that are safe to visit.

    • 4

Develop the sense of independent mastery in your preschool children. Personal goals such as tying shoes, bathing, brushing teeth and dressing oneself are examples of simple but critical goals that preschool children need to develop at an early age. Make a list of household chores and personal goals you want to teach the preschoolers. Be patient with them and let them know mastery of the goals takes practice and time.
