How to Teach a Song to Preschool Children

Teaching music to preschoolers is not only enjoyable for them, but songs teach young children about rhythm, rhyming and self-expression. Use songs to reinforce academic and social lessons to preschoolers. Write lyrics about colors, manners or healthy living and set them to tunes that young children already know such as "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." Children will learn the words to a new song more quickly if they are not required to learn a new tune as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather children together in a quiet area of the classroom. Sit on the floor with your back to the wall and ask children to sit in a semi-circle around you so they will be focused on you and not distracted by the sights and sounds of the rest of the classroom.

    • 2

In an excited tone, explain what the name of the song is and what it is about. The excited tone draws preschoolers in and gets the attention of any children who are antsy or distracted.

    • 3

Sing the song once all the way through. Use hand motions or props to act out the song as you sing.

    • 4

Ask children what they liked about the song when you are finished singing. Explain the meaning of any words that children did not understand.

    • 5

Perform the song a second time. Sing at a slower speed so children can understand and start to memorize the words.

    • 6

Repeat the song a third time. Ask children to sing along with any parts that they have memorized. Invite all children to clap the rhythm of the song along with you.

    • 7

Sing the song once or twice a day with children after the initial teaching day. Most preschoolers should be able to sing along with you within the first few days of introducing the song.
