Teach solid oral-language skills. According to Scholastic.com, one of the best predictors of later reading success is a well-developed oral vocabulary in kindergarten. Get kids well prepared with oral-language skills by teaching your preschoolers to express their feelings and to use proper manners.
Teach preschoolers key listening skills. Listening is an essential skill kindergartners need. Singing, rhyming and reading stories aloud daily with enthusiasm and character can help children become engaged in what is going on around them and will boost listening skills. In addition, step based activities such as cooking and using multi-step directions can help build listening skills.
Teach letter and number recognition to preschoolers. Although kindergartners will be learning letter sounds, shapes, colors and number recognition and how to write them; entering kindergartners should recognize most letters by sight and count to 10.
Work on fine motor skill development. Coloring, cutting, pasting and holding a pencil are all fine motor skills that are a part of daily activity in kindergarten. Working on these tasks in the preschool classroom will ensure that kids do not fall behind once they are in kindergarten.
Teach children how to be independent. Daily independent activities such as being able to pour liquid into one's cup, put shoes and jackets on and off, going to the bathroom and washing hands and following simple directions can help children to become more independent, thus preparing them for kindergarten.
