How to Teach Colors to Pre-K

Part of most preschool curriculum includes teaching students their colors. Helping young children make the association between the concept and how it relates to the real world improves the chances they will retain the information presented. You can create a simple lesson using common items to teach preschool students their basic colors.

Things You'll Need

  • Item to represent five basic colors
  • Sentence strips

Instructions

    • 1

Gather common items that are a solid color. Due to their young age, select the five basic colors to teach for this lesson. These include red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. You might select a fire engine for your red item or a banana for the yellow item.

    • 2

Write the five color names on individual sentence strips. Use the corresponding marker color for each color word to help the child make the association between the word and the color.

    • 3

Show students each item and then present the sentence strip with the matching color word. Discuss the word, how it is pronounced and the color it represents. Ask preschoolers to then look around the room and find at least one other item that is that color. Repeat this with the five colors.

    • 4

Place the sentence strips in a center so that students can review their color words during their free time. Encourage them to find additional items around the room and place them next to the appropriate color word when working in this center. This lesson teaches both the color and the associated word to preschoolers.
