How to Establish & Maintain a Safe Preschool Classroom

The Utah Education Network asserts that in the ideal preschool classroom children are intellectually stimulated and given opportunities for communication with others and self-expression. For teachers to be able to provide this learning experience, they need to develop and implement strategies involving classroom layout, resources and outside space to ensure the safety of preschoolers, both physically and emotionally.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange the classroom by positioning the teacher's desk so that you can see all students in the classroom at any one time. Arrange student desks in rows or in a semicircle with clear pathways around the room and to the classroom door. Place resources on shelves and bookcases that are within easy reach of students to prevent objects from falling down.

    • 2

Minimize the risk of playground injuries by ensuring the constant presence of adults and conducting monthly inspections of the playground to check that is clean and safe. Remove any tripping hazards, such as tree stumps, and monitor the condition of play equipment. Remove any broken items.

    • 3

Minimize indoor hazards by storing such potential choking hazards as marbles and buttons in containers that are out of reach of the children. Cleaning products and such art supplies as glue should also be kept out of reach, ideally in a locked cupboard.

    • 4

Promote emotional safety by developing a daily and weekly classroom routine that is placed on a display board so that children always know what happens next. Take time to get to know each child individually to help him feel safe and supported in class. Provide plenty of quiet periods to help children feel calm.
