Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes in case of an emergency. Knowing these ahead of time will help you direct the children to safety should the classroom need to be evacuated in the event of a fire or other crisis situation.
Know where all the fire extinguishers are located in the classroom in the event you need to use one.
Ensure that the classroom is ergonomically adequate for the amount of students the room needs to hold. Keep enough space between desks for students to move freely, thereby reducing the risk of tripping over them. Ensure that all shelving units are properly mounted and at an appropriate height to provide clearance for any students that may need to walk underneath them.
Check all electronics and ensure that there are no loose wires dangling or on the floor. If you need to plug a device into a far away outlet, ensure that the cord is adequately secured to the floor with tape to reduce the tripping risk.
Inform school security personnel if a student is acting belligerently and refuses to cease the behavior. Do not escalate the confrontation. If there is a direct threat to your personal security or the security of other student, it may be appropriate to dismiss the entire class until the individual can be properly restrained by school security.
