Prepare blank paper with eight boxes by folding the paper in half three times. Traffic word handouts can be made by writing each phrase or traffic word into a box on the folded paper. Leave space for students' illustrations. Create large flashcards for each word with a simple drawing that students can copy on their own papers. Use these eight traffic phrases: Red light, green light, yellow light, children at play, stop, railroad crossing, hidden driveway, one way.
Inform children of the importance of being able to read traffic signs. Show the students the flashcards and have them point to the corresponding words on the handouts. Have students illustrate the words on their papers. As they do this, recite the words or phrases and have students repeat after you.
Inform students they will be creating sheets to make a word game. Instruct students to cut out the words with the pictures and paste one into each of the eight boxes.
Play a matching game by distributing the items being used as markers. Ask students the following questions and allow for an answer before moving to the next. Questions: What do we do at a green traffic light? What do we do at a red traffic light? What color traffic light tells a car to slow down? What sign tells us cars are only going in one direction? What sign tells a car there may be children close by? What sign means there are railroad tracks ahead? What sign tells us that a car may come out of hiding and onto the street?
