Assign students a map of Michigan and the Great Lakes to memorize the best that they can. Give students a couple weeks to memorize important locations, such as Detroit, Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair. Then hand students a blank map and have them write the names for the locations.
Hang posters around the room with words that are important to a lesson about Michigan. For instance, make a poster with the abbreviation MI, which means Michigan. Also hang posters saying Michiganders, Michiganians and Michiganites, which all mean people from Michigan.
Have the students write a report or give a presentation on a topic about Michigan. Some students can give reports on the car industry and Henry Ford. Alternatively, students can report on the state bird, the Robin, or the state flower, the Apple Blossom.
Watch a video about the history of Michigan to help the visual learners in your classroom. Some videos can cover the founding of Michigan and how it became a state. Alternatively, get a video that shows the importance of the Civil War to Michigan.
Come to class dressed up as a famous person from Michigan. For instance, wear a red wig and some costume jewelry to come as Lucille Ball. Alternatively, come as Aretha Franklin and lip sync to a song of hers.
