Take measurements of the classroom. Draw a sketch of the classroom, including permanent features such as restrooms, cubbies, closets and windows.
Make a list of equipment you will include in the classroom. This may include book shelves, tables, chairs, computer stations, a sensory table, storage cupboards and file cabinets. Make another list of the learning centers you wish to include in the classroom. This may include dramatic play, reading, crafts, blocks and science.
Add the large pieces of furniture to the room sketch, paying attention to the flow of the room. Leave an open space for group gatherings. Use shelves and tables to divide the room into different learning center areas.
Complete updates to the classroom such as painting the walls or cleaning the carpets.
Move the furniture into the positions indicated on your sketch. Practice moving around the room to ensure the flow of the room works. Set up the learning center areas, including filling the shelves with learning materials. Add other educational materials and wall decorations to the preschool room.
Observe the children in the preschool room, paying close attention to problem areas in the layout. Make adjustments to the design as needed, testing out the new setup until you find the right arrangement for your group of preschool children.
