How to Set Up a Pre-Kindergarten Classroom

When setting up a Pre-Kindergarten classroom, remember that the room has to have areas for whole group instruction, centers and areas where students can complete class work. After thinking of the things you have to accomplish, using your space wisely while creating a safe environment for students can be achieved. Scholastic has a "class set-up tool" teachers can use online to brainstorm how they would like to arrange their class before moving furniture and other heavy items in the room.

Things You'll Need

  • Pre-Kindergarten tables and chairs
  • Large classroom rug
  • Materials to set up various centers

Instructions

    • 1

Put the teacher's desk in the corner of the room. There won't be much time to sit during the day so having it out of the way makes better use of classroom space.

    • 2

Place a large rug in front of the board. Use this area during story and circle time or any other group discussions. If students take naps, also use the area to lay nap maps during naptime.

    • 3

Hang the alphabet line above the board and hang the daily calendar, days of the week and months of the year on the board. Colors, shapes and numbers may also be in this area.

    • 4

Put the tables on the other side of the large carpet. Going from the front of the room to the back, you'll have the board, large rug and then the tables and chairs.

    • 5

Arrange the tables so that you can access the students quickly if they need help during seat work. If using rectangular tables, position the tables so that they are perpendicular to the board so students can always see the board no matter which side of the table they're sitting on.

    • 6

Position the tables one behind the other with enough space to have four different tables rather than two long tables. Also leave enough space between the tables so students can pull their chairs out and sit comfortably at the tables.

    • 7

Choose a wall in the room to have a cubby. This will be an area where students can put their personal items. An ideal place may be the back of the room where students hang jackets and back packs.

    • 8

Decide which areas around the room will have centers. Pre-K classrooms may have areas for dramatic play, blocks, art and books. There may also be a listening and computer center near outlets to plug in equipment.

    • 9

Place the art center in the back corner of the class near a sink if one is in the room. Painted work can also be placed on the counter to dry. The reading center should be away from noisy centers like dramatic play and blocks. Use a back corner of the room for dramatic play. The blocks center can be kept in a container that students can carry to the large carpet at the front of the room. Pre-K Pages also has suggestions for setting up various classroom centers for science, literacy and writing.
