How to Set Up a Language Classroom

A language classroom is a place where you focus on developing a language for students. It could be their own language contained in a deeper study, a foreign language the students are learning, or a local language that students who are not native speakers need to master. No matter what type of language classroom you are setting up, there are ways that you can structure the classroom to help students learn efficiently.

Instructions

    • 1

Make the language a focal point for all areas of the language classroom. Put pictures on the wall illustrated by the language. Put books in the language on the classroom's shelves. Hang the alphabet in the language on the wall.

    • 2

Make labels for things in the classroom in whatever language will be taught there. Label the desks, the blackboard, the pencil sharpener and anything else you can label, with its name in that language. This will help beginning students see what the language looks like.

    • 3

Create areas where students can sit to listen to instruction, like desks facing a whiteboard, along with areas where students can do group work, such as tables in the back. You might also want to include areas where students can sit and read or study materials, such as areas with chairs and couches.
