How to Decorate a Diverse Classroom

You may find yourself with a daunting task to teach a classroom with students who have different learning styles, abilities and ethnicity. Providing learning for such a diverse group can seem overwhelming. However, if you learn how to function around students who have different backgrounds or ethnicity, you may be able to relieve a lot of stress. One way to do this is to help each student feel welcomed in your classroom by decorating the room with items that relate to her culture.

Instructions

    • 1

Tape up multicultural posters and banners that have kids of various cultures and ethnic backgrounds. The picture should have examples of students or children doing activities together such as homework activities, holding hands or playing together. You can visit your local teacher's store or online stores, such as Amazon, to purchase posters and banners.

    • 2

Create an activity where students can draw pictures or make crafts that relate to their ethnic backgrounds and then pin each student's picture to the classroom walls.

    • 3

Decorate the classroom with multi-ethnic dolls with multicultural play food. If you wish, allow the students to play with the dolls and the fake foods. You can purchase dolls at online stores such as Wal-Mart, Amazon and Lakeshore.

Decorate for special ethnic celebrations. Learn about each students background and find information about certain holidays and how each holiday is celebrated. Implement decorations such as a pinata for Mexican holidays or decorate the classroom with Chinese New Year takeout boxes. You can purchase ethnic holiday decorations at Oriental Trading and Party City.
