How to Plan a Ceramics Classroom

A ceramics class can be an engaging activity for middle and high school students that allows students to get creative while learning the technical process to making various types of pottery, from vases to plaques and more. A ceramics class can be a part of a degree seeking art curriculum in college or a single course. Preparation for teaching a ceramics course should include several steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure a proper space is available for the number of students you have enrolled (or anticipate that will be enrolling). If you are a high school art teacher, this likely will not be a problem, however, if you will be teaching an extension course through a local community college, you will need to request a room assignment meets with your needs, such as a classroom that has sinks with running water.

    • 2

Develop a list of materials that you will need to teach the class. The list of items you will need will depend on whether you, or the school, will be supplying some or all of the materials needs for your ceramics class, or if students will need to purchase some or all of the materials needed to create their projects. Generally speaking, costs will be divided, with you furnishing some of the materials while students will be required to purchase a textbook,

    • 3

Ensure that your classroom offers proper ventilation. This can mean adding fans to circulate air and opening windows.

    • 4

Provide a display case so that your students can show off their work.
