Check the seating arrangements. An uncomfortable or broken chair can distract a student from paying attention in class. Arrange the seats so that your students have a clear view of the board. According to Scholastic, some teachers arrange desks in groups of four or in a U-shaped form. A U-shaped arrangement allows you and your students to maintain eye contact.
Control the temperature and lighting in the classroom. Scholastic recommends that classrooms have both dimly-lit and well-lit areas. You can allow your students to sit where they are most comfortable. If you don't have access to a thermostat in your classroom, talk to administrators about the uncomfortable conditions. Use heaters and fans to prevent extreme climate conditions that could affect students' focus.
Divide the classroom into sections designed for reading, lab work, writing and free time. Each section will cater to a certain task, allowing students to focus better while performing their duties in that section. Instruct students to clean up each section after they are done.
Decorate the classroom. Making the classroom more colorful can make the learning environment more fun. Hang educational posters, decorative posters and classroom rules on the walls. Put up your students' artwork and examples of their writing in a special section of the room to show them you appreciate their work.
