How to Arrange a Nursery Classroom

Arranging a nursery classroom requires planning and preparation. The goal is to make it as safe and baby-friendly as possible. You need to be able to move through the room freely to change diapers, heat up bottles and play with the babies. Being able to see all the children from any place in the room is also beneficial. With a few simple tips, you can arrange the perfect baby classroom.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the cribs against the walls of the classroom. This allows you to quickly look around the room and see all the babies at once. This also allows for more play area in the middle of the room. Be sure to face the side of the crib that lowers down away from the wall. This allows you easy access to the baby in the crib.

    • 2

Lay a large, colorful foam mat in the middle of the room. The foam mat helps prevent injury when babies accidently fall over.

    • 3

Place shelves on the floor next to the foam mat. These shelves should be only one to two shelves high. They need to be readily accessible to the little ones in your classroom. Place age-appropriate toys on the shelves.

    • 4

Secure cabinets against the wall, close to the changing table and/or sink. Store diapers, creams, pacifiers and bottles in the cabinets. Be sure to label each storage area with the correct child's name for the supplies parents bring in.

    • 5

Put a chair for the teacher close to a wall. This makes it easy for her to sit and feed a baby and still keep an eye on the little ones in the cribs and on the mat playing.

    • 6

Keep all chemicals and cleaning supplies up high and locked up tight. Never use hazardous chemicals around the children in your room. A high cabinet is the best storage space for cleaning supplies.
