Divide the room into four distinct areas and decorate for each season. Design the summer area with a beach scene, showcasing a bright yellow sun and a deep blue sea. Don't be afraid to use texture like real sand glued to paper. Place it on the wall in sections. Handfuls of cotton can be used to create snow banks for the winter section. Add a rainbow of colored leaves to the trees for autumn (this is a memorable activity for the kids to take part in). Look for plastic grass at your local craft store and use cloth flowers to create a spring scene.
The alphabet can be used all over the classroom. Use colorful letter cutouts in varying sizes around the room. Attach objects, animals, colors and whatever else works in your room to teach the kids words and letters. For instance, design an airplane and have it pulling the letter "A" behind it. A bumblebee is a natural partner for the letter "B." Continue around the room until you have a match for each letter.
Cowboys and cowgirls will feel welcome at this nursery classroom decorated like a ranch. Use construction paper to put a fence around the room. Create animals like cotton-ball sheep and add pictures of horses and cows. Design signs to welcome the kids into different areas of the room. For instance, "Rodeo Joe's reading corner" and "Bronco Bill's art center." Make a cowgirl sign for the girls bathroom and a cowboy sign for the boys room.
For a forest, create a woodland theme by designing trees you can affix to the walls. Experiment with techniques until you find something that works for the space. One method is to twist brown paper bags into long thin strips, staple them to the wall to create a textured tree trunk and branches. Add leaves made of different shades of green construction paper. Finally, use hook-and-latch strips to attach animals to the trees and surrounding areas. Put the soft strip of hook-and-latch material on the stuffed animal and the rough part on the wall.
