Consider posters--of sports stars, rock stars, actresses--for dressing up bare walls. Or maybe you'll come across a poster with a funny saying that's perfect for the student.
Pictures of friends and family can help ease homesickness. Buy a bulletin board or a collage picture frame and include your favorite pictures of the student with her friends and family in the collection.
Look into comfortable bedding--one of the most practical and important gifts someone living in a dorm can receive. Dorm room beds are often hard, so a mattress pad or extra pillows are a good idea. For the student who likes to study or write papers on her bed, a husband pillow may be appropriate. These pillows provide support and have arms that wrap around the sides.
Consider a small refrigerator. After all, the food court and cafeterias are only open during certain hours.
Choose from among the many game consoles and video players. They're staples in dorm life and promote a sense of community between those living on the same floor. Those with these systems in their room can host small movie night gatherings or challenge each other to video games. Or, a subscription to Netflix is sure to keep the student entertained.
Don't overlook the basics for studying and school. The average college student will go through paper, pens, and post-it notes faster than seems possible. Having an ample supply of these items keeps the student organized and ready to study for a big exam. A study lamp for her desk or one that can be plugged into her laptop will keep her from bothering her roommate with the bright overhead light during late-night study sessions.
