Opt for comfort over luxury or trendiness when choosing furniture such as lounging chairs or desk chairs. Since you will be spending a lot of time in your dorm room, it is important to make the space cozy.
Decorate walls by hanging a few posters or tapestries on each wall. Hang your signature pieces — whether tapestries or visuals depicting favorite musicians, athletes or sports teams — on walls that face the door, so that passersby see these displays. You will attract fellow hall mates that share your passions and interests.
Avoid hanging items that may offend or disenfranchise others, especially women, if you are trying to attract them. For instance, avoid hanging pictures of scantily clad females, as some college girls may be turned off by such images.
Keep decorations, especially posters and sports memorabilia, diverse, so as to show off your different interests and to attract males and females. If you go overboard decorating your dorm room in honor of a particular theme (a sports team, for instance) you may give the impression that you are an obsessed fanatic with no other interests.
Decorate cheaply. Dorm rooms typically withstand a lot of wear and tear, especially when used as lounges or hangouts for large, rowdy groups. Unless you are willing to risk loss, theft or damage, avoid displaying valuables, such as collectible items or vintage memorabilia. Keep these items at home in your parent’s care.
Display a few framed photographs of family and close friends on your desk and bookshelf. These pictures may generate conversation with visitors, whether male or female. They will also provide you with a taste of home when you are feeling homesick.
