If there is one universal trait about college students it is that most of them are on a budget. Decorating on a budget is no problem by mixing and matching. Get creative and use cheap items such as: plants, window curtains, throw rugs, posters or sports memorabilia.
College is not only about the bookwork but also learning who you are, so don't feel like you have to commit to one style. Mix and match blankets, throw pillows, wall hangings and lounge chairs for a contemporary and comfortable setting. Don't be afraid to use color, since a boring dorm room can seem much like a jail cell. Using a lot of color will make it cheery and inviting.
It is also important to respect your co-inhabitant. When sharing a dorm room don't use anything that would be offensive to your roommate. Respect each other and each others' tastes.
If the dorm room doesn't come with a computer desk be sure to buy one. This will keep your computer, books and study materials organized; after all that is the point of being in college. You can also purchase bed risers, sold online at stores such as Dorm Delicious, to lift your bed and create extra storage underneath.
Wall or door hooks are perfect for hanging jackets, book bags, purses or towels. Adhere door hooks to the back of closet doors of the dorm room to keep things off the floor.
Other organization items could include: a closet organizer, plastic bins and a shower caddy, which can easily store all personal hygiene items.
Make the space your own. Hang a picture collage board so that you can display pictures to make the space personal. A picture collage board allows you to easily change out the pictures at any time. Alternative ideas would be a digital photo frame which displays pictures at random.
Bring your favorite item from home; whatever reminds you of home and makes you happy. This could be a favorite movie, blanket or even a futon.
Ask someone at the college the exact content of the dorm room, so that you can better plan what to bring. Does it include a computer desk? Does it have a closet or dresser? What is the square footage?
Next, contact your roommate and make a list of who is bringing what. Items such as a television, futon or couch, small refrigerator and a large rug or carpet should only be brought by one person, so divide the larger items between the two of you.
