Give the psychology major a book of humor. Choose a title like "I Hate Valentine's Day" or an instructional book like "How to Procrastinate." Give "The Pop Up Book of Phobias," a fun way of looking at a serious subject.
Give textbooks, a gift that will be much appreciated. Select titles from the student's required reading list. Try giving educational books typically not on the list. Choose from among a number of titles, like "Freud for Beginners" or "Introducing Psychology."
Choose a fun gift with a Sigmund Freud theme. Order a sky-diving Freud showing the psychiatrist hanging from a parachute or a pair of fluffy Freudian slippers or a Freudian sips mug, with their plays on words. Give the psychology major a Jung Finger Puppet or a Pavlov's Dog Finger Puppet that doubles as a fridge magnet.
Give games and equipment with special relevance to psychology. Give the student a brain demonstration mode, ESP (extra sensory perception) testing cards or a board game with a psychology theme.
Give a DVD of a film with a psychology theme or whose characters have psychiatric problems. Choose from among several movies, including "American Psycho" about a violent sociopath, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" set in a psychiatric hospital, "Girl Interrupted" about a girl in a mental hospital, "Rain Man," a study of autism and "The Three Faces Of Eve," a story of a woman with a multiple personality disorder.
Give an educational DVD suitable for the student's level of study.
Give a wall chart. Choose one that illustrates the anatomy of the brain or sleep disorders or anything else related to the student's major.
Give posters that illustrate the history of psychology, like those that depict a Victorian mental asylum or pictures of Freud, Pavlov and Jung.
