Teaching Themes For Nursery Children

Teaching the appropriate nursery school curriculum is key to developing early childhood education. Comprehension and retention skills are used in young students when teaching the necessary themes. Focus on one theme at a time and move on to the next once all students have reached full comprehension.
  1. Seasons

    • Teach your nursery school students the theme of seasons. Focus on the four seasons: winter, spring, summer and fall. Discuss the weather conditions, appropriate clothing, holidays and activities associated with each season. Have students color pictures that represent each season. You can also hold up various clothing items and have students guess during which season the clothing item should be worn.

    Occupations

    • Teach a theme on various occupations, including a teacher, librarian, doctor, lawyer, nurse, homemaker, dentist, scientist, police officer, firefighter or veterinarian. Read picture books aloud that focus on different careers or have a career day where people of different professions visit and discuss their job. Highlight what people of various professions do and why their jobs are important in your community.

    Shapes

    • Teach a theme on basic shapes, including a triangle, square, circle, rectangle, oval, diamond and heart. Have cutouts of shapes for students to identify, trace or match together. Assign students to color print-outs of each shape. During snack time, cut cookies or sandwiches out into shapes with a cookie cutter. Students should be able to identify the shape they are eating.

    Transportation

    • Focus your teaching on the theme of transportation, including airplanes, vehicles, bicycles, helicopters, boats, buses and trains. Read books about transportation and have transportation toys available for students to play with during free time. Discuss the purpose of transportation and who uses each type of transportation.
