Equipment for Nursery Schools

Everything from indoor to outdoor nursery school space needs equipment. More important than eye-catching items or cost-cutting bargains is choosing the safest products. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, children can strangle in the loops of window blind cords, soft mattresses can cause suffocation, and using recalled items--versus those that are not--can make the difference between life and death. So understanding safety makes the difference between a long-running nursery school and a short-lived one.
  1. Indoor Equipment

    • Color, lighting and sound help create an appropriate atmosphere for a nursery school, so purchase items neutral in color for a natural, relaxed environment. Choosing functional and durable floors, ceilings and walls also enhances the best aesthetics. Additionally, prevent clutter and maximize space with strategically placed storage items.

Organize the areas in the school, using the equipment to define them. Activity centers, or areas where the children can explore, need age- and size-appropriate furniture and toys. Include cubbies for children to keep their personal items in, such as book bags. Napping areas should have cozy and relaxing cots, and diapering and toileting areas should be spacious and easy to clean and disinfect. Food preparation areas require bottle warmers, microwaves and refrigerators, and feeding and dining areas must accommodate the smaller size of the children.

    Outdoor Equipment

    • Consider the playground location, size, fencing terrain, surface and storage before purchasing any equipment for outside. Outdoor equipment like a sandpit or box, water stations, gardens or play structures make great activity and exploration items, so make sure they complement the playground area without causing safety issues or clutter.

Young children, especially under 6, can get seriously hurt from falls on playgrounds, so make sure the playground surfacing chosen--and its maintenance--helps protect children from serious injuries. Think about purchasing wood chips, mulch, sand or safety-tested rubber mats to enhance the safety of the playground area.

    Adult Equipment

    • Parents and staff, an important part of any nursery school, should feel at ease and comfortable when at the school, or else they'll have a hard time believing their children do. Visually appealing adult areas like a reception area, lounge, restroom, work room and office area create a balanced atmosphere, especially for staff who need a daily break from their everyday work routine.
