Schools for Disabled Kids

Disabled children require a different environment from the standard public school classroom. Under federal guidelines, schools that teach disabled children are mandated to offer specific services and accommodations to ensure that each child receives a quality education tailored to their specific needs. These requirements include individualized educational plans, transportation, and specialized equipment and supplies, as well as attention to safety issues for disabled students.
  1. Courses

    • Any federally funded education program must accommodate children with disabilities under Section 504 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act of 1973. So all courses will comply, a school must accommodate parents' requests for an evaluation, which will assess a disabled child's individual needs. Some schools offer activities outside the general education scope, such as technology training, physical education and art instruction.

    Education Plans

    • Under the federal Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, once an evaluation is complete, the school must form Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for disabled students. An IEP will include aspects of occupational, physical, and speech or language therapies and may also provide for a classroom aide to work directly with the student. Parents can participate in a child's IEP.

    Facilities

    • Schools for disabled children must strive to take into consideration all aspects of what students may need. The physical environment may need to have altered lighting and color schemes for children with vision problems, wheelchair lifts, and carpeting. Schools and programs for disabled children also take into account how the students access the information. For example, Braille and large-print books and audio learning are readily available.

    Transportation

    • School districts that provide transportation to general-education students must also provide it for disabled students. It is also required if it is essential to the student's IEP. Schools for disabled children or schools with a program for disabled children must take into account several factors of transportation, including inclement weather and proper disability accommodations.
