Government Grants for Disabled Children

There are many types of U.S. government grants available for disabled children. Government grants are generally for state governments, educational organizations, public housing, nonprofit organizations and small businesses. For-profit organizations are also eligible. You can find more individualized government grants at the state level rather than the federal.
  1. Main Resource

    • Your main source of government grants is Grants.gov. This site contains a database of most government assistance available. It is searchable. Once registered, you can apply for over 600 grants available on the site for disabled children. You will need to submit an application. It can take anywhere from a few days to four weeks to process your registration request. To get a step-by-step guide to the site, see the Grants.gov User Guide (grants.gov/assets/ApplicantUserGuide.pdf ).

    Disability.gov

    • Managed by the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy, Disability.gov provides another resource for government assistance for special-needs children. This site contains information on a variety of programs, services, laws and regulations. It also gives updated information on grants awarded for children with special needs.

    Government Agencies

    • Specific government agencies also have information on their sites about available grants. You can go to an agency's website and look for grant opportunities on their main page. For example, the Department of Education's website (ed.gov/index.jhtml) has specific grant opportunities funded by the department on their site. One grant available is money to help retain personnel who work with children with disabilities. You will find information on elegibility, application processes and the forms needed to apply.

    State Governments

    • You will find opportunities for funding within your own state government. Try accessing the State Councils on Developmental Disabilities (acf.hhs.gov/programs/add/states/ddcs.html) for your state. Look for your state's Vocational Rehabilitation and Public Assistance department. Within this department, you will find grants sponsored by the state and federal government.

    Individual Assistance

    • If you are looking for governmental individual assistance, you can go to Benefits.gov. Here you will find information on over 1,000 government benefits and assistance programs, including grants for children with disabilities. Look for the Grant/Scholarships/Fellowships in the "quick search" box. This site allows you to access benefit details as well as to determine who is eligible and where to apply. Other individual grants can be found on Student Aid on the Web (studentaid.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/students/english/index.jsp) and the U.S. Department of Small Business Administration (sba.gov/).
