Canadian Government Grants for Disabled Access

Grants available to disabled Canadians can provide a better home life, make it easier to get to work and also provide the work itself. The grants are available to those who fit into a certain categories. Often the disability cannot be a temporary one, but a permanent physical or mental impairment.
  1. Job Access

    • The Canadian government's Opportunity Fund for People with Disabilities helps those who are disabled and want to work. Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada, have a permanent mental or physical disability, not be working more than 20 hours a week or be unemployed. Also they must not be eligible for certain federal programs.

    Home Access

    • The Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program for the Disabled helps with handicapped-accessible additions to homes. It provides funding for landlords or homeowners to install items such as hand rails and chairlifts. To be eligible, the property must be occupied by a person on low income who has a disability. The home must meet the minimum health and safety standards. The grants may range from $16,000 to $24,000 for homeowners depending on where in Canada they live. Funding up to $36,000 may be given to landlords. Modifications to the home need to coincide with the disability that the occupant has.

    Access to Education

    • For students who have a disability, funding is available to help with education. To be eligible a student must have a permanent disability, apply for and qualify for a Canada Student Loan, have written information about the costs of the equipment and services required, and be enrolled part-time or full-time in certain post-secondary institutions.

      The grant provides funding of $8,000 for each academic year. The money may be used for tutors, braillers, interpreters and other resources. Apply for the grant at the same time that you apply for a Canada Student Loan. You may be eligible for more than one grant at a time.
