Canadian Government Grants for College

Many students have a tough time paying their way through college or other post-secondary schools. Canadian students who qualify and meet the criteria will be awarded a grant by the Canadian government to pursue their educational goals. If a student qualifies for a grant for college, tuition costs and living expenses will be paid for.
  1. Low-Income Grants

    • Low-Income Grants are available to Canadian students that come from low-income families. Canadian students must meet two requirements; apply for a Canada Student Loan and be enrolled in a program for a minimum of two years. The National Student Loans Service Centre determines if a student qualifies for a low-income loan when they apply for the Canadian Student Loans Program.

Canadian students may receive $250 per month for up to $3,000 per school year. Canadian students must reapply for a low-income grant each school year for renewal.

    Middle-Income Grants

    • Middle-Income Grants eligibility requirements are similar to the Low-Income Grant, but the grant amount is less, and for middle-income families. Canadian students may receive $100 per month for up to $1,000 per school year. Canadian students must reapply for a Middle-Income Grant each school year.

    Disabilities Grants

    • The Canadian government offers two types of government grants for students with disabilities. The first type of grant is for students with permanent disabilities and the second is students with disabilities that require service and/or equipment.

Canadian students can receive a $2,000 per school year if they apply for a Canadian Student Loan and enroll part-time in post-secondary education.

Canadian students with temporary disabilities can receive an additional $8,000 per year for equipment, nursing and tutor care. Disabled students must provide medical documentation to prove they are disabled and need services and/or equipment. Contact your local Provincial and Territorial Student Financial Assistance Offices for additional information regarding this particular grant.

    Other Canadian Government Grants

    • The Canadian government has grants available for Canadian students who have children or attend college part-time. Canadian students that have children can receive $200 per month for per dependent under 12 years of age. The student must apply for a Canadian Student loan and come from a low-income family.

Part-time college students in Canada have other government grants available to them depending on their circumstances such as hardships, length of college term and dependents. Students must fill out a Canadian Student Loan application.
