Government Grants for Children With Disabled Parents

When a parent or loved one becomes disabled, it can be extremely stressful for that person to find the means to fund their child’s education. There are grants available to children of disabled parents and even some grandparents; here is additional information in regards to eligibility for these government grants.
  1. Grants for Dependents of Correctional Officers

    • You may be eligible for this grant program if you are the spouse or child of a correctional officer from the State of Illinois who has been killed or at least 90 percent disabled. This grant program provides tuition assistance as well of assistance for any mandatory fees for study (undergraduate or graduate) at an ISAC-approved college in Illinois. The grant amount varies, but you may be able to receive assistance for an equivalent of eight semesters (12 quarters). You may find an application for this grant at the financial aid office of an ISAC-approved college.

    Grants for Dependents of Police or Fire Officers

    • You may be eligible for this program if you are the spouse of child of an Illinois police or fire officer who became at least 90 percent disabled or was killed while in the line of duty. The amount of this grant varies, but you may also be able to receive assistance equal to eight semesters or 12 quarters at an ISAC-approved college in Illinois. You may find the application for this grant at the financial aid office of an ISAC-approved college.

    LEPD and Georgia Public Safety Memorial Grant

    • This grant requires that you are the child of a public safety officer of the state of Georgia who was killed or permanently disable while in the line of duty in order to receive financial assistance to go towards post-secondary education. This grant is funded by the Georgia Lottery. The amount of this grant varies and is based on what is left of the cost of attendance after other grants and scholarships have been applied. You may find the application in the resources section below. Once you have filled out the application, take to your school’s financial aid office.

    Protect and Serve Grant – Pierce College

    • This grant is for those who are actively serving or have retired from public service personnel as well as those actively serving and veterans of armed forces; this also includes their spouses and dependent children. With this grant, you are given a discount of up to 25 percent of tuition expenses for classes taken at Peirce College either online or on campus in Philadelphia, PA.

    Roger Williams University Memorial Fire and Police Department Grant

    • In order to be eligible for this grant, you must have a parent or grandparent who serves in the Bristol Police Department in Bristol, RI. This grant is a full four-year grant. You may obtain the application from Roger Williams University’s financial aid office.
