Though there aren't any government grants specifically earmarked for parents, the Federal Pell Grant program provides as much as $4000 per academic year to students who can demonstrate need. Students who qualify for the Pell Grant may also qualify for one of several other government grants.
Many states have grant programs similar to the Pell Grant for students with financial need, though most of the state programs give money only to students staying in-state for school.
A number of states, schools and other organizations offer scholarships to parents, particularly single parents, who are going to school. There are also thousands of other scholarships available for students demonstrating academic achievement.
Student loans are another option for parents looking for a way to pay for school when grants and scholarships don't cover all the costs. Many student loans, such as the Stafford Loan, do not begin repayment until after graduation.
Parents who are looking for financial aid of any kind for going to school for the first time or back to school must fill out the Free Application for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA).
