Government Grants for Single Mothers in College

According to Raise the Nation, an organization that provides financial aid to single mothers, almost 38 percent of single mothers are at or below the poverty line, making it difficult for them to further their educations. Luckily, there are government grants for single mothers that help offset the financial burdens of tuition, books and childcare, thus making college affordable. Before applying for these grants and scholarships, fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  1. Pell Grant

    • The information you supply in your FAFSA determines if you are eligible for the Pell Grant. Usually awarded to those pursuing an undergraduate degree, the amount you receive is based on financial need, the amount needed to attend your school and your enrollment status (part-time or full-time student). The maximum award amount for the Pell Grant is $5500 per school year.

    Moms Return to Schools

    • The Obama administration has recognized the time involved in raising a child by introducing a new grant for single mothers commonly referred to as "Moms Return to Schools." Because enrolling in a college that meets on a campus can be impossible for some mothers, this grant is for women completing their education online and at a self-set pace. You become eligible for this grant automatically when filling out FAFSA and can receive up to $10,000.

    American Opportunity Credit

    • The American Opportunity Credit allows the first $4,000 of single mothers' higher education to be free. Although you must pay for your expenses upfront, you will receive a tax credit at the end of the year, granted as reimbursement for the cost of your education.
