School tuition and book prices are on the rise. Government grants can help students with tuition assistance, as well as buying books, supplies and reference materials necessary for students to succeed. Grants do not have to be repaid, which helps keep debt load after graduation more manageable.
You must be a U.S. citizen and have resided in the U.S. or U.S. territory for at least three years prior to applying for a grant.
Pell Grants began in 1972 and have helped millions of students get an education who may not have been otherwise able to afford it. To apply, go to the financial aid office at any college or university and complete the paperwork that asks questions about income and about the estimated amount of family contribution.
The Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant is an additional program that builds on the Pell Grant and is generally offered to the lowest-income applicants for the Pell Grant. However, each college campus is limited on how many students can receive this grant, so you should apply as soon as possible. This application cannot be completed online; you must apply for this when you apply for the Pell Grant in any college or university financial aid office.
This grant is also only offered to Pell Grant recipients who have a 3.0 grade point average or higher before entering college. If you have been out of school for a while, you may not qualify at first. You would be able to apply again after maintaining a 3.0 GPA during your first year of college.
State government and municipalities may offer additional grant programs for single mothers. Organizations and charities also often offer such grants. Certain universities and colleges offer qualifying individuals grants as well.
