Grant & Scholarships for Single Mothers to Go to College

If you're a single mother who has decided to go back to school, chances are you'll need help to finish your endeavor. The average cost of in-state college per year is $5,043. Fortunately there are scholarship opportunities for you to consider.
  1. Pell Grants

    • Apply for the federal Pell Grant first. The amount you qualify for will be determined by your income. The maximum amount has recently been increased, and it covers tuition and books. Any surplus may be used for living expenses. You can apply online.

    PEO International

    • The Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) was founded and funded by women to help others reach their educational goals. You must be within two years of graduating, so be sure you're watching the deadlines.

    Jeannette Rankin

    • Jeannette Rankin was the first woman elected to Congress, and she strove to make higher learning possible for low-income women. Scholarship applications are taken between November and January.

    Finance Office

    • Ask the financial aid officer at your school if she knows of scholarships you may qualify for. There is probably a list of available scholarships posted at your school.

    Community Scholarships

    • Keep your eyes open for local scholarship opportunities. Call civic associations and clubs in your community. Look on the bulletin board at your local library. Peruse your daily paper for listings.
