Raise The Nation provides grants to single mothers for pursuing postsecondary education. To be eligible for its Scholarship for Continuing Education, you must be a single-parent woman, be accepted or currently enrolled in a postsecondary course, and fall below the median income for a four-person family in your state. Grant cycles for this scholarship are held in the spring and fall. An application fee is charged, and grant amounts vary.

The Women’s Independence Scholarship Program offers assistance to women who have survived abuse and are hoping to advance their education. This program, which assists many single mothers, is open to both full- and part-time students who are enrolled in, or have been accepted into, a community college, a private or state college/university, a technical or vocational school, or a proprietary school (a for-profit business that provides education and training). Other eligibility requirements include being a U.S. citizen/legal resident; showing financial need; having a career goal; having sought services from a nonprofit, domestic-abuse agency for a minimum of of six months; and being willing to complete her degree or training. Scholarship applications are accepted throughout the year.

Administered by the U.S. Department of Education, the Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need program provides grants to graduate students who are pursuing degrees in fields where there is a national need for workers. These merit-based grants are generally awarded through the educational institutions themselves. Women can apply for through the Department of Education website or through their educational institute’s financial aid office.
