How to Make Your Nursery Classroom Multicultural & Multilingual

As the great melting pot that is the United States continues to mingle different cultures, you may need or desire to make your nursery classroom multicultural and multilingual. In a classroom of diverse students, a multicultural classroom will make everyone feel welcome. If your classroom is not very diverse, creating a multicultural classroom is one way to expose your students to the other cultures of the world.

      Decorate your classroom with colorful posters that portray different countries.

      Say "Hello," "Good morning," "How are you?" and "Goodbye" to you students in multiple languages every day.

      Sing songs in different languages and play multicultural music.

      Read stories from different cultures.

      Celebrate holidays from different cultures. Decorate accordingly and bring in food dishes from the country.

      Ask parents to send cultural items in with their children for Show and Tell.

      Incorporate other languages into your lessons. For example, when you are teaching colors, teach the name of the color in a few languages.
