Constitution Activities for Daycare Providers

Teaching young children about the United States Constitution can be an early introduction to American history and political science. Very young children's short attention spans and pre-literacy can limit both the length and depth of Constitution activities. Focus on designing interactive games and crafts that involve children in basic tenants and values.
  1. Rules

    • Use the Constitution to illustrate the purpose of rules and authority to children. Lead the group in a brief, interactive discussion about rules they are required to follow at daycare, school and home. Engage the children in imagining what might happen to behavior without these standards in place. Compare the importance of rules at home and school to the value of the Constitution in society. With the children, develop a list of rules for the daycare and sign the list like the founding Fathers.

    Branches

    • Develop a discussion that leads to a basic understanding of the Constitution's division of power among the three branches of government. Explain to the children how the legislative, executive and judicial branch work to most efficiently accomplish tasks required to support the US government. Lead the children in envisioning the results of all household or daycare chores and responsibilities falling on the shoulders of a single individual. Guide the lesson about governing branches into the development of a daycare chore chart.

    Voting

    • Hold a care center election to serve as an early election to voting. Allow the children to vote on an actual issue, which could include the destination of an upcoming field trip or a weekly craft activity. To streamline the process, present two or three options. Depending on the age of the children, allow them to exercise their freedom of speech by creating posters and giving speeches advocating their preferred choice before the election.

    Leadership

    • Briefly summarize a basic biography of major current elected officials in American politics, such as a State governor or President. Consider offering an oral quiz to the children with small prizes for correct information. Lead the students in a discussion about leadership and authority, both in politics and at home. Facilitate an open discussion about qualities that make an excellent President, governor or mayor. Consider using this list as a standard for excellence in behavior, and rewarding children who consistently display traits on the list.
