Daycare Games for Children

Because daycare isn't a mandatory grade for children, but serves as a service for working parents, it often ends up with students of different ages. When trying to find activities that involve every child, daycare teachers can sometimes be at a loss. While it's nice to always include everyone, there are times when it's okay to play games geared toward only one age group.
  1. Pigs Fly

    • Pigs Fly is a game geared toward the older children in daycare, ranging from 3 to 5 years old.

Place the children in a circle and explain that when you call out an animal that flies, such as a bird, everyone should flap their arms like wings. When you call out an animal that can't fly, such as a pig, they should stay still. If a child flaps her arms at the wrong time, she gains a "P." Second and third times earn her an "I" and a "G." The first child to spell out PIG is out. Flap your arms with each animal, so it isn't obvious to the children what they're supposed to do.

    Indian Chief

    • Seat all the children in a circle on the floor and send one child out of the room. Choose one child in the circle to be the "Indian Chief." This child will lead the rest in a series of activities, such as clapping hands or patting heads. The rest of the children must follow whatever the chief is doing, without making it obvious which child is the leader. The guesser is allowed back in the room after the activity has already started and tries to guess which child is leading the group.

    Who Am I?

    • This game also involves a guesser and should be played with older children. Blindfold one child, who's the guesser, and form the other children in a circle around him. Spin him around so he has no idea which child is standing where. When the guesser stops spinning, he should point to one child and call out the name of an animal. The child has to make that animal's sound without enabling the guesser to figure out who he is. If the guesser names the correct child, he gets to go again. If he guesses incorrectly, that child becomes the guesser.

    Seven Up

    • This is fun game to play at the beginning of the year when the children don't know each other to get them to break the ice. Choose seven children to line up at the front of the classroom. Everyone else puts their heads down on the desk. Each of the seven children taps one of the children at the desks on the head. When all seven have made their selection, you call out, "Head's up!" Each of the tapped children tries to guess who tapped them on the head. Anyone who guesses correctly gets to switch places.
