Resources & Games for Children Learning the Alphabet

A number of resources and games are available online and offline to teach children the alphabet as the first building block in learning to read and write. Allow the child to help choose resources that he finds enjoyable to further increase his desire to continue using the resources. The resources can also be used as interaction between the teacher and the child to further increase their understanding of the language.
  1. Books, Magazines and Videos

    • Visit any bookstore or library to find many varieties of books and magazines available to help children learn the alphabet. The books and magazines come in a variety of shapes and sizes and interactivity levels. Books and magazines can include the child's favorite characters or simply be instructional. Two magazine examples are "Zootles" and "National Geographic Little Kids." Printed media can help the child see and interact with the letters in a way that will keep his interest and make learning fun.

    Videos

    • Learning videos that focus on the alphabet are also available with vibrant characters, sing along songs and simple instructions. The videos can usually be found at bookstores, libraries, children's stores and major retailers. Videos are typically available in VHS and DVD formats and can be played for the child at your convenience. They are also easily transportable for visits to friends and family.

    Coloring Sheets

    • Printable coloring sheets are available online and alphabet coloring books can be found in stores to give the child the opportunity to familiarize herself with the shape of the letters. The pages can be traced, colored in or small scraps of paper can be glued to the pages to fill in the letter provided the child is old enough and receives proper supervision.

    Writing

    • Give the child the opportunity to write the letters or scribble, draw, or make marks that resemble the letter. Writing enables the child to gain a better understanding and connect spoken letters to written letters and will improve his reading and recognition skills as he learns.

    Games

    • Alphabet learning games are available in "Zootles" and "National Geographic Little Kids" magazines to help your child learn. In addition to those games, you can find games online or purchase flash cards, the LeapFrog Spin & Sing Alphabet Zoo, or the Alphabet Squiggle Board Game. Playing games with your child gives him hands-on experience so he can see, feel and trace the letters while the game promotes his interest in learning.
