How to Make Your Teaching Environment Effective

The physical classroom plays an important role in the learning process. To be effective, the classroom environment must be aiding learning, not working against it. Teachers should regularly assess their classrooms for problems and opportunities for improvement. Students and teachers alike will spend a good part of their day in this room, so it should be comfortable for everyone while reinforcing the purpose of the space. While classrooms should reflect specific class and community needs, incorporating some basic strategies will help teachers establish an effective classroom environment.

Instructions

    • 1

Reinforce classroom management rules, procedures and consequences by displaying them in writing. This helps to establish expectations and remind students of them throughout the year.

    • 2

Minimize distractions in the classroom to keep the focus on learning. Look around the room and see if there is anything that isn't serving a purpose. Classrooms should never be a storage room of years gone by. If something is not currently useful and related to learning, consider removing it.

    • 3

Create visual aids in the classroom that correspond to the core concepts being taught. This aids visual learners and enhances learning while making good use of the classroom walls.

    • 4

Motivate students by displaying their work and accomplishments. Students, just like adults, enjoy recognition. Displaying accomplishments helps boost students' self-steem while providing decoration.

    • 5

Maintain a tidy and organized work space. Teachers are role models and should maintain a clean work space if they expect students to do the same.

    • 6

Organize the classroom and create designated areas and places for everything. Clearly label bins and cabinets. Designate a space for each student's personal belongings. Keeping the classroom organized keeps it running smoothly and prevents learning time from being wasted.

    • 7

Add little touches to the classroom that make it positive and welcoming. Make sure these are not distractions, but instead add comfort to the classroom. Ideas include: adding some throw pillows to reading areas; making sure the classroom smells nice; displaying encouraging words; and displaying seasonal decorations.

    • 8

Evaluate the facilities and equipment for age appropriateness. Eliminate physical barriers, and use space wisely. Address issues with the principal or administrator.
