Find posters or prints to hang in the classroom. Get some that have inspirational messages for students. Buy enough so that you can change the posters during the year.
Buy a plant for the classroom. Pick up a bright watering can as well. Plants create a warm environment, and teachers can have students help care for them.
Find an old wicker or wooden stand. Paint it a bright color or use a striped or dotted design.
Place the wicker or wooden stand by the door. Put tissues and hand sanitizer on the stand. When students walk in the door, they will see a bright color and a touch of home.
Place posters around the room. Use unlikely places, not just walls, such as on your desk or the side of a file cabinet.
Place desks in a U-shape formation. Use two rows if necessary. Break down rows to help create a more welcoming environment.
Use bulletin boards or even walls to display student work. Use work from a previous year for the start of school. Replace it with current student work once the year is underway.
Place the plant by the window. Make sure you have a plastic dish underneath to collect water. Put the decorative watering can right next to it.
