How to Make an Inviting Reading Area in a Classroom

For some students, reading can be a chore, especially when they associate books with a cold, uncomfortable classroom. While some schools are made of concrete blocks, others lack windows, and still others feature plain gray walls. These environments can make students feel nervous, tired or distracted. To remedy this problem, many teachers create reading areas or nooks in a corner or small section of the classroom. Mimicking a home environment through decor and furnishings can stimulate students' creativity, draw students' interest and make students comfortable while they read.

Instructions

    • 1

Add color to your reading area via paint, if possible, or borders and posters. Colors like red and orange can agitate students, while colors like blue and green can foster a calm environment.

    • 2

Organize the reading area so students can access materials on their own. Label containers clearly. Consider the needs of children with disabilities when placing shelves.

    • 3

Furnish your reading area for comfort. Use soft chairs or beanbags for seating, and add throw pillows as cozy finishing touches. A small table creates a surface for students to write about what they read.

    • 4

Decorate with plants, rugs, and other home décor items. Making the students feel at home when reading.

    • 5

Display books and supplies where students can see them. Face book covers outward and store other supplies, such as books on CD or tape, in clear plastic bins.
