How to Make Reading More Enjoyable for Students

Teachers often know that reading can be fun and struggle to understand why students don't feel the same way. Children today have a lot of entertainment options and chances are, they receive many of the pleasures of reading through other media sources. To make reading more enjoyable for students, teachers often have to find creative and energetic ways to engage students in the reading process. Competing with modern technology can be challenging, but there are plenty of resources available to help teachers make it a success.

Instructions

    • 1

Read with passion and enthusiasm. The way teachers or parents read to students affects the experience the student has. Consider getting a little theatrical, if you can, by alternating voices and using appropriate voice inflection to simulate the story.

    • 2

Pick books that children will enjoy. While teachers often have some favorites that they read or assign over and over, this does not make the book enjoyable to children. If you need suggestions, just ask your readers. They know what they like and there is a book on it!

    • 3

Pick books that are age- and reading-level-appropriate. For a student to enjoy reading, he needs to be able to read with comfort and understand what is taking place in the story. If the student has to focus all his attention on reading the words, he will miss the enjoyment that could be had from a better selected book.

    • 4

Encourage reflection. Ask students about the reading. Whether the book was read aloud or by individuals, encourage students to reflect on what they read. Students might even enjoy guessing what will come next. Depending on the grade level, a reading journal might be appropriate.

    • 5

Turn reading into a game. If the class is reading a mystery, solve the mystery together as the book progresses. Students might enjoy dressing in character as a chapter book comes to an end, or having a class party in the theme of a book. Teachers can also reward students for their reading with praise and small token items.

    • 6

Center activities around reading. There are a lot of ideas on the Internet for themes or activities that can be used to promote reading. Teachers often have a few ideas of their own. Activities are fun because they get students thinking, interacting and moving around. By using activities that promote reading, reading becomes fun by association. Why not pick a few reading activities and submit them for a classroom vote?

    • 7

Invite guest readers to come to your classroom. These can be parents, community members or local authors. Bringing in someone new to read to the class can make reading exciting and provides reading role models. It also promotes partnerships.

    • 8

Allow students to read in groups. By making reading a social activity, it becomes fun. Students often enjoy moving around the classroom or finding a new spot in the classroom where the group can read. Students who are still learning to read will benefit by hearing the different skill levels and establish cooperative learning skills.
