How to Make Lesson Plans More Interesting

One thing that almost all teachers and parents that are homeschooling have in common is the problem of how to make lesson plans more interesting. If a child is uninterested and bored, he is not learning. With a little creativity applied, any subject can be interesting and fun to learn. Know the learning style of the children involved. Learning styles include visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Lesson plans for large groups need to address all three learning styles. Build a lesson plan for an individual based on her specific learning style.

Instructions

    • 1

Make lesson plans more interesting with music for any age group and for any subject, including, math, English, reading and science. Write a song to the lesson plan. Songs with a catchy tune are usually easy to learn and relatively fun, as the students can sing along. There are many benefits to teaching with music, such as reducing anxiety, facilitating a positive learning mood and stimulating imagination and creativity. Songs for different age groups and subjects are available online.

Tell stories instead of reading from a book. Change your voice for different characters and be funny when it is appropriate. Children of all ages tend to remember stories that are exciting and fun. Stories can teach verbs and nouns as well as the history of the United States. Another idea is to create plays in which the students play different roles and interact with each other. For example, older children could recreate a famous trial for a lesson plan on government.

    • 3

Get the students involved. It is never fun to sit and listen to someone read. Have students take turns reading. Have the students explain their viewpoint on the subject. Ask questions. Other ideas include fill in the blanks.

    • 4

Play games. Recreate a popular board game or television game show for students to play. Ask questions or leave clues about the subject. Depending upon the game, students can play one-on-one or divided into teams. For example, have teams complete various challenges to move onto the next round.

Use visual aids such as puppets, characters, movies or short videos. An idea would be to have older students create a short video and then play all the videos in front of the class. Have guests, such as an employee of a historical place, a nurse or a dog trainer, come to class dressed in period garb or in work uniforms.
