Choose one or more short stories rich with interesting characters. Write the story characters' names on index cards and place them in a box.
Have each student draw an index card from the box. Have the students keep the characters' identity secret. Have the students read the story in which their character appears.
Have the students convene in a circle in class when they are finished reading. Have each student describe to the student circle his character from the story. For instance, "I am a big, gray elephant that eats leaves in the jungle and sprays water with my trunk."
Have fellow students add their ideas to character descriptions after a student is finished describing who she is in the story. For example, "The elephant also likes to wade in the water and play with his friends."
Adjust the game to tailor it to your individual class. Make adjustments to meet your personal goals as an educator. For example, students could read the story at home as a homework assignment rather than read it in class. Students could describe their character in front of the class and take questions to change the format.
