How to Make a Reading Data Folder for Elementary Students

Data collection can be a daunting task for teachers. With the pressures of lesson planning, classroom management and district expectations, this key aspect of teaching is often ignored. However, without data collection, you are unable to monitor the student's reading progress and adjust the lessons to meet his individual needs. You can organize the reading data you collect by creating a folder to hold the information for each student.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose either a three-ring paper folder or a three-ring binder to serve as your data collection folder. Write the student's name on the front of the folder.

    • 2

Create a student information page to place at the front of each folder. Use your computer's word processing program to type the student's name, reading level and parent contact information of each student. This should be the first page you see in the folder, and it will provide you with an overview of the student's reading information.

    • 3

Create at least three dividers for your reading data folder. These dividers should be areas that you plan to assess through your chosen data collection methods. Sections might include specific reading skills, such as comprehension or fluency. Choose these sections based on your grade level's reading requirements, as well as the student's individual reading readiness.

    • 4

Place the student information sheet, dividers and blank data collection paper in the folder. Place enough blank paper in each section to allow you enough sheets for a number of reading data collection sessions. Depending on the type of data you collect, put blank data charts in each section for later use. If you prefer, you may also choose to use page protectors to slide the data collection sheets easily in and out of the folder.

Create reading data folders for all members of your class and store them in alphabetical order on a shelf in your classroom. This allows you quick and easy access to their folders.
