Write the name or tape a picture of your school mascot or school theme on the chalkboard or whiteboard. Schools that don't have a mascot such as a wildcat often have decorative themes like a rain forest theme. Writing this down will guide the thought process as you and your students work together to determine a name for your classroom.
Instruct children with writing skills to write down suggestions for names for the classroom. Guide the process by leading a discussion about the possibilities and boundaries. Let students know if you've been asked to think of a type of wildcat for your classroom name and offer one or two suggestions, such as "The Leopards," so the students know what type of suggestions you're looking for.
Collect classroom name suggestions in a bucket. View suggestions after the students have left for the day and write down the choices on the board.
Discuss name suggestions with the students the next day; talk about why each name might be good for the class and list the characteristics and traits each name represents to the students. Take a vote by having the students raise their hands for the name they like best. Instruct children to vote only once then select the name that receives the majority of the votes.
Conduct classroom activities and provide projects to help students learn more about their chosen classroom name. Whether the name is based on an animal, climate, insect or something else altogether, capitalize on the learning opportunity to further classroom community spirit.
