How to Design a Homeschool Classroom

Home-school classrooms come in many shapes and sizes. Many also serve double duty as a main family gathering place, whether it be the kitchen or living room. The intended use of the room plays a large part in how a home-school classroom is designed. There are many options available to home-school families but the design should work well with your educational philosophy. For example, a family following Charlotte Mason's philosophy on education may find no need for desks for each student.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the intended use of the room you will use as a home-school classroom. If the room is not solely dedicated to home-schooling, you must take into account the other uses of the room.

    • 2

Take inventory of the furniture currently occupying the classroom. Remove any excess furniture not needed for the room's dual use. Too much extra furniture takes up space and makes the room feel cluttered.

    • 3

Arrange any furniture needed for the room's alternate use if applicable to your home-school classroom. When arranging the furniture, try to make the furniture comfortable without taking up a large amount of space. Remember that for a family of three there is no reason to offer seating for seven to watch television.

    • 4

Measure the amount of free space in your home-school classroom. You do not want to purchase furniture for the classroom that will not fit in your space.

    • 5

Purchase furniture that provides workspace for both you and your students. Remember to find furniture that makes your educational philosophy easy to follow.

    • 6

Arrange workstations for your students so that they can get in and out easily. Keep a large enough walkway so that you can also get to your students should they require your help. Set your own work area where you can see what your students are doing during the day.

    • 7

Place storage around the room making sure it is out of your walkway. Easy access to storage is necessary to facilitate putting items away throughout the day.
