Place the reading center in a corner or next to a window. This will allow quiet time away from the other playful activities in the room. The reading center should contain looks of picture books and a bean bag or soft chair.
Place an arts, crafts and play manipulatives table close to a sink. This will allow children to clean up easier. This center should have safety scissors, pencils, washable crayons and markers, construction paper, paper scraps, glue, colored cotton balls, stickers, washable paint, paint paper, brushes, play dough, wikki sticks and a mini sand station.
Set up a science center next to a wall. You can have a shelf sticking out from the wall with activities on each side of the bookshelf. Provide a table for the science activities. This center should contain a tornado in a bottle, animal books, animal toys and easy science projects.
Set up a math and manipulatives center close to the science center. This can also be a shelf that sticks out from the wall. Provide a table for children to sit at while they play with the math activities. A math and manipulatives center should have counting sticks, blocks, Lego blocks, puzzles and games.
Create a dress up and role play center. A corner of the room is usually the best place for this center. It provides enough room to place a play kitchen, a shelf to store kitchen utensils, a coat rack with dress up clothes, hats and baby dolls with accessories.
Create a circle time area in the room. This needs to be a somewhat central location in the room. It can be next to a wall or window. The teacher will need a chair, and the children will need a rug to sit on. Charts of the alphabet, numbers, seasons, days of the week and weather need to be posted here. A whiteboard will also come in handy.
