Place a child-sized table in the center of the space designated for the writing center.
Place an empty bookshelf near the writing table.
Fill the small clear plastic bins with writing materials. Keep like materials together. For instance, fill one bin with colored pencils, one bin with markers, and one bin with crayons.
Place the writing materials bins on one of the shelves.
Fill the medium clear plastic bins with paper. Keep like materials together. For instance, plain white paper in one bin, lined paper in one bin, colored paper in one bin, and blank cards in another bin.
Place envelopes in a medium plastic bin. Preschoolers enjoy creating "mail."
Place the filled medium bins on one of the shelves.
Choose pictures and words to feature on an inspiration wall. For instance, a picture of a cat with the word "cat" beneath it. Pictures and corresponding names of classmates are good choices for this wall.
Tape the inspiration words and pictures on the wall. Students can copy the words if they choose.
Place a trash can in the writing center for collecting wastepaper. The wastepaper can be recycled.
Replenish writing center materials often.
