How to Create a Pop-up Book

Pop-up books are visually interesting to children. They provide interactive pictures, either because they stand up from the page or because little handles or levers allow them to be moved. Making a pop-up book is a great way to express your creative nature and the child will enjoy it for many years.

Instructions

  1. Single Page

    • 1

Fold the construction paper so that the crease is parallel to the short sides of the paper. Decorate the outside of the construction paper to form the cover of the pop-up book. This should include the name of the book and your name as the author. This can be done with crayons or markers.

    • 2

Fold the white paper in half so that the crease is parallel to the short sides of the paper. Write the story for that page on one side of the inside section of the paper, keeping at least an inch from the inside edge of the paper. Draw the background on the other side of the inside section. This can be done with the crayons, markers or colored pencils.

    • 3

Fold the paper closed and using scissors, cut two tabs on the crease. These should be an inch deep and can be as long as necessary. Do not cut the tabs off.

    • 4

Open the paper and fold the tabs the opposite way of the paper. This will make the crease on the tab open the opposite direction of the rest of the paper. When the page is opened, this will make the tabs stand up. Apply any shapes or decorations to the tabs using glue. These can be cutouts from additional construction paper or small toys or dried flowers. Make sure the item is not too heavy for the tab and that that the tab can lift it. Use a flat item to ensure that the book can properly close.

    • 5

Repeat the steps with white paper until the entire book has been created. Glue the pages back to back, being sure not to glue the tabs in place. Glue the white pages to the construction paper, using staples to secure the first and last page if necessary.
