How to Create Name Tracing Paper

Teaching your child to write is a rewarding activity that will be extremely valuable to him in later life. With the help of letter tracing paper your child can learn to write his name during his preschool and kindergarten years as well as other basic words and the letters of the alphabet. These name tracing sheets are easy and inexpensive to make at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a piece of A4 paper flat in a landscape position.

    • 2

Draw a straight line an inch in from the top edge using a ruler and ball point pen. Draw another line an inch in from the bottom edge in the same way. Measure the halfway point between the two lines and draw a dotted or dashed line across using the ruler and ballpoint pen.

    • 3

Write your child's name lightly in pencil across the page between the two lines. Ensure that the letters are formed correctly in traditional print and are not joined. The name should sit on the bottom line with tall letters and capitals touching the top line and other letters touching the halfway line.

    • 4

Draw dots onto the penciled name using a felt tip pen. Ensure that you have dots at the very top and bottom of each letter, then fill in the rest of the letter with evenly spaced dots that your child will be able to join easily when writing his name.

    • 5

Rub out the pencil lines with an eraser.

    • 6

Repeat this process on several sheets. Create smaller tracing guides by turning an A4 sheet to a portrait position, folding it in half lengthwise and drawing a guide on the top and bottom half.
