Educate your child about the tools she will need to clean and bandage a cut. Identify each "tool" in her "first aid tool box" and explain how to properly use it.
Agree to pretend that she has just fallen and cut her knee. Explain that she must clean her hands of any germs and then follow by cleaning the cut and surrounding area as well. Using a alcohol wipe, instruct her to clean her hands. Next, use a cotton ball to clean the cut and surrounding area with peroxide or a peroxide-based anti-bacterial solution. Explain that either solution will kill bacteria and germs that are on the skin.
Ask her to gently blow on the cut, allowing the peroxide to take effect and sanitize the area.
Ask her to extend her index finger and then apply a small dollop of Neosporin. Instruct her to liberally apply the product to the cut, explaining that it is a medication used to heal the broken skin and prevent germs from returning.
Use a gauze or band-aid depending on the size of the "cut." Since the cut is fictional, you can act out how to apply both.
Explain that all medicines must be administered by an adult. Explain that even though the first aid kit may contain aspirin or anti-acid tablets, she should not take any medication without parent or adult supervision.
Close the first-aid kit and have the young child return it to its assigned location. Explain that the first aid kit will remain in that one place for everyone to use. Agree that you will help her use the tools whenever she falls or needs first aid.
